TES GeoPolicy Editor Dan McGroarty
TES GeoPolicy Editor Dan McGroarty discussed China’s dominance of rare earths and its strategic implications for the U.S. economy and military on the Tim Jones Show, a podcast hosted by former Missouri speaker of the house Tim Jones. Among other things McGroarty noted the leverage this gives China in the continuing trade dispute with the Trump administration – but also the broader struggle for technological dominance. The interview, available on the American Resources Policy Network Web site, comes as world leaders prepare to gather in Osaka, Japan for the 2019 G20 Summit and Ministerial meetings, where many hope that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may announce a breakthrough in their trade negotiations.
- Pull quotes from the McGroarty interview: “There was never a time in which the United States was equipping its military with materials that were being sold to us by the Soviets. (…) This is a very unusual situation we’re in with China. (…) These are the metals and minerals of the 21st Century. These are the tech metals that we need as a society. (..) The trade war… we might solve that. But underneath the trade war, there’s a tech war going on, and I don’t think we’ve even begun to realize that.”
