Washington beyond the headlines: Death, Covid and, of course, Taxes

By Andy Blom, TES Washington Editor

It’s been a bad patch for Biden and his Administration. The debacle in Afghanistan goes on (killing a friendly aid worker and a bunch of children in a ‘retailitory’ strike?); 15,000 migrants huddle under a bridge in Texas while a court forces him back to Trump immigration policies; inflation continues unabated; it appears his $3.5 trillion cradle-to-grave Government invasion of our lives is on the rocks; violent crime is out of control and France just sent its Ambassador home. And those are just the headlines! Well, beyond the headlines free market thinkers and doers are working to keep things sane. Here’s this week’s news…

Democrats to Hit the Poor with Taxes that can Actually Kill Them. No, that’s not hyperbole. Listen up. In the New Democrat tax proposals to pay for their gargantuan $3.5 trillion social engineering bill they include a $96 billion tax hike on the poorest Americans. But that’s not enough. Research shows this would lead to an additional 2.75 million Americans continuing to smoke cancer causing cigarettes — because the D’s are also levying heavy taxes on Vaping, the most successful escape route from the dangers of smoking. Oh, and don’t forget the increased criminal activity from smuggled cigarettes. Americans for Tax Reform didn’t. they have the whole story here.

More Covid Insanity, Now Boarding at Gate 13. Mask, no mask. Vaccine, no vaccine. Lockdown, open up. The Covid rules are an ever shifting nonsensical mix. Capricious even. But if you want to see true inconsistency, get to know the Covid air travel rules. and restrictions. Who we let fly, and enter our country is completely illogical. Ryan Bourne of the Cato Institute tries to help you understand it all here. But they’re more vaccinated than we are, right? Not necessarily. Get that scoop here.

Unity Shmunity…Biden Politicizes the Military. The President, whomever he or she might be, appoints people to three year terms on Military Advisory Boards. Traditionally, an incoming President, regardless of party, leaves those appointees to fill out their term. Not ‘Mr. Unity, Joe Biden’. Kindly Uncle Joe has fired President Trump’s appointees to the Advisory Boards of the U.S. Military Academies — Army, Navy and Air Force. Some of these well qualified appointees are fighting back against this politicization of the military and the whole issue raises questions about Biden’s vindictive partisanship. Heritage Foundation tells you more here.

Tax the Rich! Tax the Corporations! Put the Corner Drug Store Out of Business! Desperate to find ways to pay for their $3.5 trillion remake-America-in-their-own-image bill, the Democrats are planning crippling taxes on S Corps. What does S Corp mean? Small businesses, farms, family businesses…Main Street. And it’s going to affect you. At least 1.6 million businesses will see substantial tax hikes. Tens of millions of workers will be affected. And don’t kid yourself, those businesses that manage to stay in business will have to raise prices to survive. This is an important and complicated story that is worth reading.

One More Thing Government Doesn’t Need to Do: Paid Family Leave. It sounds like a good idea until you take a closer look — a Federal Entitlement Paid Family Leave. But as is so often the case, the devil is in the details. Before you look at this latest Biden initiative and say “goody, free money”, take a moment to study the details. The Independent Women’s Forum has taken the time to lay them out in a letter to the President and Congress. Surprise! It hits women and low income wage workers hardest. Oh, and you’ll still have to pick up the taxpayer tab.

Not Worn Out by All this Talk About Taxes? Here’s the Whole Magilla. When Congress wants to spend $3.5 to $5 trillion of your dollars, you should be concerned about how they’re planning to get the money. Peter Roff gives us a look at the entirety of the D’s plan to tax everybody and everything (please, don’t tell me you believed a politician when they said they wouldn’t tax you). The plan may change here or there, but now’s the time to call your Senator or Congressperson.
