Okay Policy Fans, America has now officially entered a period of “Middle Child Syndrome” policy. Middle Child Syndrome is when a family’s middle child feels (and often is) ignored, slighted, unnoticed, even abandoned. And that is just how Middle America, and moderates of both parties, must feel in today’s Washington (and media). The Democrats are thoroughly captured by the wild left Progressives. The Republicans, not wishing to miss the chance to overreact, are in thrall to Trump-ish conservatives (although, to be fair, absent President Trump’s rather interesting personality,, many of his policies were basically populist). So the rest, and great bulk, of us go unnoticed. Will it get better? We can only hope, and where allowed, pray. Meanwhile free market thinkers and doers are working on policy that affects you, your business and your life. The news that matters…

Worst Idea of the Week — Double the Size and Power of the IRS. Even writing that sentence gives me the willies. But not Elizabeth Warren. The Massachusetts Senator’s proposed ‘Wealth Tax’ is just chock full of bad ideas, including a massive expansion of the Internal Revenue Service. Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) lays out all the bad news, of which there is plenty. The proposed Wealth Tax doesn’t tax income, it taxes assets. And 11 countries that have tried it have already abandoned it. Oh, and it is unconstitutional so we can spend a lot of money ginning it up, fighting legal battles and then abandoning it. Par for the course.

Unfortunately, We KNOW What They Want. Flush with new power, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have made it very clear what their priorities are…you can see it by what bills they introduce first: eliminate free speech and control elections. This is an unprecedented grab for power but it’s not all the bad news. Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform sounds the warning and gives the sobering details here.

How Real is the Threat? Listen Up. The Pelosi/Schumer power grab would permanently change American elections. How? This Heritage Foundation podcast explains what elections would be like under the proposed new law.

Radical Suggestion: A Non-Radical OMB Director. One of President Biden’s first big defeats was the demise of his nominee for Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director. With the departure of the toxically partisan Neera Tanden, John Palatiello suggests that Biden live up to his unity and bipartisanship promises by appointing a Republican to head OMB…particularly a Republican who is a budget hawk. As America sinks, or rather hurtles, deeper and deeper into debt it’s a suggestion that has merit. Could a Republican, budget-conscious OMB Director curb Biden’s free spending ways? Read his interesting proposal and possible candidates.

Power Run Amuck — Congress Attacks the Free Press. When you receive a threatening letter from the Halls of Government, it causes concern. When that letter is sent to providers that bring news outlets into American homes, it should cause us all to worry. But that is exactly what is happening. Under the guise of preventing “disinformation” influential members of the House Subcommittee on Communications and Technology are trying to have Fox News, OANN and Newsmax ‘de-platformed’ because they don’t like their right-of-center editorial bent. Regardless of what you watch and your own political leaning, this should raise BIG red flags. The Washington Times warns of the real dangers of government censorship of media.

The Affordable Care Act Isn’t. And it’s About to Get Worse. The Affordable Care Act or as it is known, Obamacare, was going to reduce medical costs and assure coverage for everybody.  Well, more people may be covered, but the costs, often hidden at first, keep rising. And while people may notice their premiums going up, most folks don’t realize the full extent of how many of their tax dollars the ACA is eating up. The Galen Institute does and they have done a thorough study and report on how ACA Government subsidies (read your tax dollars) keep rising while contributing to health inflation and income inequality. It’s your money. Read it. And read more here on how the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion COVID-19 bill subsidizes the rich. As if they needed it.

Know Your State Legislator? Send Them This. ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, has prepared a coalition letter for state legislators calling on Congress to oppose the PRO Act, H.R. 842, The Protecting the Right to Organize Act. The bill goes way beyond its stated purpose, threatening workers’ rights, state laws, consumer rights and a whole bunch of other nastiness. Read the letter, you don’t have to agree with us, and consider asking your state rep to sign.
